American playwright; b. Lebanon, Mo. He is a master of realistic dialogue in which monologue, conversation, and direct address overlap. His favorite themes are decay, dissolution, and loss. Among his plays are The Hot l Baltimore (1973), The Fifth of July (1977), Talley's Folly (1979; Pulitzer), Burn This (1987), and Redwood Curtain (1993).
