Jay Leibowitz Biography

Jay Leibowitz
Jay Leibowitz

a New Jersey native and has been acting around and about NY/ NJ since he graduated from Emerson College in 1997. Among other places, he's performed with NJ Shakespeare Festival, 12 Miles West, and Destiny; was on tour with the Shoestring Players; house managed at George Street Playhouse; is an original member of Alliance Rep; and recently got laid off from an Internet start‑up in New York City. Luckily, he is still living with his parents. For a long time when he was younger, Jay wondered about existence and God and things like that. Then he went to college and suddenly wondered why everyone seemed to think Kenneth Branagh was such a great actor. He thought long and hard about this and is still unable to come up with an answer today. The best he could do was to grow a beard. At Emerson, Kristin Linklater taught him how to breathe out his knees, shout out his elbows, and (most importantly) how to curse between the lines of the verse. With that gift, Jay was suddenly convinced that Shakespeare wasn't so hard to do and that he actually knew something about classical acting. (Al Pacino may have also had something to do with that, too, but who can ever be sure about these things?) Anyway, Hal Bloome wrote this book about how Shakespeare invented the human being and it basically says that without Shakespeare none of us would be here today. And without any of us, Shakespeare wouldn't be here today. We exist because of Shakespeare. Jay never read the book and it's all very conceptual and, as director, Jay reserves the right to be all very conceptual. Enjoy the show and give Jenn money so that she can reimburse him and give to AIDS charities. It makes her happy and she's his friend.
