has been associated with theatre and opera companies throughout the country. He was composer/sound designer at the Cincinnati Playhouse for eight years. Recent sound design includes Thunder Knocking at the Door at Arena Stage and Gross Indecency at Cincinnati Playhouse. His production company, Bianchi & Smith, is credited with the first virtual orchestra used for a mainstage opera. As well, he is part owner and Head Designer of Realtime Music Solutions, which promotes business exploitation of Virtual Orchestra technology. Other recent Virtual Orchestra work includes the Annie National Tour and the Lucent Gala at Telecom '99, Geneva, which featured Natalie Cole singing and Sir John Barry conducting. He is a research partner with Lucent Technologies engaged in gestural control, and he has developed computer playback systems for a number of productions, including the New York Shakespeare Festival's 1994 production of Blade to the Heat, the 1995 Shakespeare in the Park production of Troilus and Cressida, and the 1997 Lincoln Center production of God's Heart. Dr. Smith has written music for all types of performing ensembles, is currently composing a sequel to Mozart's Die Zauberflöte, and is Professor of Sound Technology at NYCTechnical College.
