James Goldman Biography

has written plays, books, and lyrics for musicals, screenplays, teleplays, and novels. Among his plays are They Might Be Giants; Blood, Sweat and Stanley Poole (with William Goldman); and The Lion In Winter. His latest play, based on the life of Leo Tolstoy, premiered on London's West End in 1995. In addition to Follies (Best Musical: New York Drama Critics, London Evening Standard, Olivier, and Plays and Players Awards), his Broadway musicals include collaborations with John Kander and Bock & Harnick. For films, he has written The Lion In Winter (Academy Award, WGA Screenwriters and British Screenwriters Awards), They Might Be Giants, Nicholas and Alexandra, Robin and Marian, and White Nights. He has written a musical book for television—"Evening Primrose," with music and lyrics by Stephen Sondheim—and the teleplays "Oliver Twist," "Anna Karenina," and the mini-series "Anastasia." His novels are Waldorf; The Man From Greek and Roman, Myself As Witness, and Fulton County.
